FlexSuReTM

FlexSuReTM is a pedicle based lumbar dynamic stabilizer. The device employs a titanium alloy and exceptionally unique geometry to restore healthy spinal kinematics and kinetics. This includes proper limits of motion; healthy force-deflection behavior; and normal instantaneous centers of rotation and motion throughout flexion, extension, lateral bending and torsion. Further, this type of compliance, when properly employed, is known to eliminate measurable wear debris and to eliminate failure by fatigue.

A degenerating spinal disc is believed to be the product of adverse changes in the biochemistry and the biomechanics of a spinal segment. These adverse changes create a degenerative cascade ultimately leading to pain. At Nexus TDR we have focused on the restoration of the biomechanics of the spinal segment. The hope is that by our concentrating our efforts on our core competency of restoration of spinal mechanics we may provide a healthy environment in which a biological agent can succeed. Thus coupled, the spinal disc might regenerate. So this device appropriately carries the moniker of FlexSupportRegenerateTM.

The biomechanics and biochemistry are non-trivial and much research is yet to be done. Yet, FlexSuReTM is demonstrating the potential to go beyond that achieved with currently available dynamic stabilizers and to actually restore proper kinematics and kinetics. Whereas, the currently available devices provide some support to the segment they negatively impact both kinematics and kinetics (i.e. they are too stiff, provide unnatural motion, create wear debris, and risk fatigue failure, etc.) The proper mechanical solution must provide correct motion and stability in all 6 degrees of freedom (consider: the instantaneous centers of rotation; the force-deflection response in flexion, extension, and lateral bending; the limits of motion).
